Cross cutural cable laying

A team of us from the Wairarapa went and lay cables at a NGO radio station in Cambodia.
Where it is not just about getting the job done but getting it done in such a way as the final product will acutally be used and useable.

Like many NGOs they run on the smell of an oily rag.

They had wires strung around their building giving them a sometimes network.

Six months earlier when I was there, we talked about what a group of Kiwis could do, and a network was put on the drawing board.

Over the next few months we worked out what was needed and got a team together. Five of us went and in two weeks we laid 100 cat6 cables to give them a robust centralized network.

It is not just about laying cables. In a warm culture you also need to spend time off the task with the people. By the end of the time the people we were working for did not want us to go.

Still today we have contact with them and the project, having taken them from the cables on the left so they can effectively do their job of broadcasting.
